Welcome to the new St. Louis Park Magazine website! We are thrilled to unveil this radical makeover after nearly a year of dreaming, planning, coding and tweaking. We hope you enjoy the new look as much as we do.
During the process of coming up with this design, we came up with a few words that describe our monthly magazine. Engaging. Catchy. Open. Clean. Forward.
Just a quick reminder that voting for our Best of St. Louis Park 2014 readers' choice contest closes on November 20. Have you cast your online ballot yet? Start your holiday shopping on a royal note at the third annual Knightsbridge Boutique Event on Saturday, November 9 from 10 a.m.- 3 p.m. at Benilde-St. Margaret's Haben Center. The inspiration for this shopping extravaganza comes from the Knightsbridge upscale retail district in London, where it's likely that Kate and Pippa have probably spent more than a few Saturday afternoons themselves.
Well, after tonight all of those shining orange globes, dotting front steps and porches throughout St. Louis Park, all beautifully and artfully decorated, will sadly be past their prime. The City of St. Louis Park is offering you an opportunity to put those gourds to good use as compost: Pitch A Pumpkin at Wolfe Park, 3700 Monterey Drive, on Friday-Sunday, November 1-3, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. There's no cost to pass your pumpkins along to the compost pile or to a local farm that can use them for animal feed.
Although it seems like school just started (I know some students might disagree), the Education Minnesota Professional Conference break on Thursday, October 17 and Friday, October 18 – formerly known to many parents as MEA– is quickly approaching. If you’re looking for some fun and educational activities for kids of all ages, there are several options in The Park. Since these school-release events tend to fill up quickly, consider registering your child as soon as possible as deadlines are approaching. Here’s just a sample of what’s available.
The story of Appalachian life in northern Georgia will be brought vividly to life in October, courtesy of Maggie’s Farm Theater. Foxfire, written by Susan Cooper and Hume Cronyn, tells the story of feisty Annie Nations, a 79-year old widow who faces family challenges, while at the same time, tangling with a local real estate developer eager to purchase her land. Actress Jessica Tandy, the wife of Hume Cronyn, won a Tony Award for her role in the 1982 Broadway production and later went on to receive an Emmy Award for the television version.
There’s nothing like a good old fashioned board game to bring a family together, but playing on the Wii comes close. Family game day is great for children entering kindergarten and up. Just as a true summer heat wave arrives, it’s time to think about the end of summer as St. Louis Park students will soon be heading back to school. Here’s something else to think about: the deadline for the first-ever “Picture The Park” photo contest, sponsored by St. Louis Park Magazine, is Saturday, August 31. We’d love to see what you’ve been doing this summer, although photos taken from September 1, 2012 until the deadline are all eligible. (A winter shot might be fun to see right about now).
Looking for some unique entertainment options in The Park this week? As always, they are plenty of great choices. On Wednesday, August 21 from 7–8:30 p.m., check out the Community Talent Show at Wolfe Park where your friends, neighbors and community members are ready to put on a show. This is a free event. The following night, return to Wolfe Park for an Open Mic Night featuring the talented Blutopians (Blues, Rock) among us. Grab your guitar or another instrument of choice and be part of the free show from 7–8 p.m.
There is a big bash planned for Saturday, August 17 at the Shops at West End. You Betcha! Minnesota-Made Festival 2013 promises an entertaining day – from 12:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.– filled with live music, delicious food, a street rod and collector car show and even two unique competitions: a Minnesota accent contest (you know you have one, whether you like it or not – might as well display it proudly) and a loon calling contest. If that’s successful, maybe there will be some low flying loons over the festival grounds in the southwest corner of West End at Hwy. 100 and I-394.
