Art in the Park

The SLP Friends of the Arts unveil a community mosaic.

This weekend, art blossoms and blooms (yep,
even in October!) at The Shops at West End. Don’t miss the fun as the St. Louis
Park Friends of the Arts (FOTA) unveil a community mosaic, carefully composed
of the individual artwork of 100 St. Louis Park residents.

During this past summer, FOTA organized several
workshops where community members gathered to create personal mosaics, all
based on the mandala design, a spiritual symbol common in Hindu and Buddhist

The workshops were part of FOTA’s Our Town
initiative, a biennial “art-making extravaganza” that celebrates St. Louis Park’s
creative side. The initiative aims to make creative opportunities available to
all residents, regardless of income or artistic experience. This year’s Our
Town theme, “art in nature,” emphasized the connections between creative
expression and the natural world. In addition to the mandala mosaic workshops,
FOTA hosted several nature sketching workshops and a plein air painting day at
Westwood Hills Nature Center.

The community mosaic installation, called “100
Hands,” will be unveiled this Friday evening in its new home. The free soiree—including
appetizers, drinks and guest speakers—is open to the public, so come for the
community spirit, and stay for the great view. (You can also catch a sneak peek
of FOTA’s 2014 juried art exhibit, which includes work from St. Louis Park artists
and opens officially on Saturday, October 11.)

Community mosaic unveiling: Friday, October 10. Free. 6–7:30 p.m. ShowPlace
